Bayfront Health Punta Gorda to Host Event to Raise Awareness, Celebrate
September is National Recovery Month, a national observance that focuses on raising awareness of mental and substance use disorders, celebrating individuals in long-term recovery, and acknowledging the work of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. Bayfront Health is celebrating Recovery Month by hosting “Our Community Rocks: A Rock Painting Event”. The event will be held September 14, 5:00-6:30 p.m. at Bayfront Health Punta Gorda Medical Office Building, 713 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda.
In 2012, Charlotte County recorded the highest rate of suicide for the past decade and in 2013, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) reported that the proportion of adults between the ages 18-44 in Charlotte County who reported having depressive disorder doubled the state’s proportion of 15.8% with Charlotte County at 32.2%.
In a report by Drug Free Charlotte County, accidental deaths caused by prescription drugs increased by more than 58 percent in 2015. Morphine caused the highest number of deaths at 25, according to the Medical Examiner. Most deaths from prescription drug abuse were in combination with other drugs.
