Southwest Florida Home Infusion Awarded Accreditation from the Joint Commission
PUNTA GORDA, FL (August 9, 2013) – Charlotte Regional, Peace River Regional, and Venice Regional Medical Centers are proud to announce that Southwest Florida Home Infusion has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in home care. The accreditation award recognizes Southwest Florida Home Infusion’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state of the art standards.
Southwest Florida Home Infusion underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in July, 2013. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Southwest Florida Home Infusion for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.
Established in 1988, The Joint Commission’s Home Care Accreditation Program accredits more than 5,600 organizations. The Joint Commission’s standards address the home care organization’s performance in specific areas, and specify requirements to ensure that patient care and services are provided in a safe manner. The Joint Commission develops its standards in consultation with health care experts, providers and researchers, as well as measurement experts, purchasers and consumers.
"In achieving Joint Commission accreditation, (name of organization) has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients," says Margherita Labson, R.N., executive director, Home Care Accreditation, The Joint Commission. “Accreditation is a voluntary process and I commend Southwest Florida Home Infusion for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”
"With Joint Commission accreditation, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis from the top down. Joint Commission accreditation provides us a framework to take our organization to the next level and helps create a culture of excellence,” says José Morillo, CEO at Charlotte Regional Medical Center. “Achieving Joint Commission accreditation, for our organization, is a major step toward maintaining excellence and continually improving the care we provide.”
Home infusion therapy involves the administration of drugs and other medicines, typically intravenously (IV), in the comfort and convenience of a patient's home. Ideal for patients with serious illnesses who require ongoing therapies, home infusion offers 24/7 care without the need to come to the hospital.
Home infusion therapy is always initiated by a prescription from a qualified physician who is overseeing a patient's care. Care can be delivered by the patient, friends/family, or trained nursing staff. It is overseen by trained pharmacists, dietitians, nurses and home health professionals, and services typically also include administrative services, patient education/training services, pharmacy services, care coordination, and supplies and equipment.
The most common drug therapies that can be administered at home include antibiotics, parenteral nutrition and IVIG therapy. Common diagnoses that require IV therapy include infections that do not get better with oral antibiotics, congestive heart failure, immune disorders, and others.
Southwest Florida Home Infusion is based in Punta Gorda, Florida, and is operated in association with Charlotte, Peace River, and Venice Regional Medical Centers.
